Our History
Life in the 7th District
In 2022, Southern Maryland was designated a National Heritage Area by an act of Congress. This act recognized the unique significance of Southern Maryland to the nation’s history. The 7th District plays an integral role in Maryland's history with St. Clement's Island, the landing site of the first English settlers in 1634, located just offshore in the Potomac River. The St. Clements Island Museum is located just a few hundred yards from The Potomac Gardens. From the museum, you can take a water taxi to St. Clements Island and visit the reconstructed Blackistone Lighthouse.
